25 QUEENSLANDERS TO RECEIVE $20,000 SCHOLARSHIPS TO WORK IN HYDROGEN INDUSTRY

25 Queenslanders wanting to work in the hydrogen economy will get a head start in their career aspirations with 25 $20,000 scholarships to help them through their university studies in fields ranging from science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) as part of Labor’s National Hydrogen Plan.

These scholarships will help locals get the skills they need to work in an industry which could be worth up to $10 billion and employing 16,000 workers in coming decades.

We need to get young Australians qualified now to work in the industry, so we can reap these economic benefits down the track.

Only Labor has a plan to make Gladstone Australia’s hydrogen capital – with its deep water port and LNG industry making it the natural choice to be home to the National Hydrogen Innovation Hub.

The Hub will kick-start early commercialisation of hydrogen technologies, provide a hub for investment and research agencies, and provide opportunities to leverage LNG infrastructure to support hydrogen exports.

As part of this plan, we will also:

  • Allocate $1 billion of funding from the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) to support clean hydrogen development.
  • Invest up to $90 million of unallocated funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) to support research, demonstration and pre-commercial deployment of hydrogen technologies.
  • Invest $40 million of unallocated funding from the CEFC Clean Energy Innovation Fund to target hydrogen technologies and businesses that have passed the research and development stage.

We want to see locals get the jobs that the hydrogen economy can bring – right here in Gladstone. These scholarships will be tailored to help ensure locals earn the qualifications needed to enter the industry.

Funding for this commitment has been included in Labor’s Fair Go Budget Plan, available at http://www.alp.org.au/labors_fiscal_plan
