For weeks, Labor has been putting pressure on the Housing Minister Michael Sukkar to raise the price cap for homes eligible to purchase using the Family Home Guarantee.
The Family Home Guarantee Scheme is intended to help single parents to buy a home with a deposit of two percent.
However, as we have exposed in Parliament, the current price caps are way out of whack with reality in places like:
- Launceston, Tasmania
- Byron Bay, New South Wales
- Nelson Bay, New South Wales
- Bega, New South Wales
- Narooma, New South Wales
- Moruya, New South Wales
- Karratha, Western Australia
In Senate Estimates two weeks ago, Labor asked the Government if they would commit to lifting the cap so single parent families don’t miss out.
Minister Hume responded by saying: “We haven't even begun this program yet... we're not changing a program we haven't begun”.
Today they have done exactly that.
The pressure we put on them has worked.
This is good news for single parents around the country who would have missed out on this scheme if it wasn’t for the pressure put on the government by Labor and local newspapers like The Examiner in Launceston.
